En medio del paisaje salvaje de Alaska, el matrimonio formado por Irene y Gary va a la deriva. Para cumplir un viejo sueño de Gary deciden construir una cabaña en un remoto rincón de la isla. Irene sospecha que el plan de Gary es el primer paso para abandonarla y pronto comienza a sufrir extrañas jaquecas y le asaltan recuerdos de un trágico pasado familiar. Cuando el duro invierno llega sin previo aviso, la pareja se ve sometida a una tensión insólita. Su hija mayor, Rhoda, intenta ayudarles aunque ella misma está atravesando una crisis personal.
